Emergency First Aid at Work Course (EFAW)

Course Aim:

To give instruction in the procedures required in the event of person(s) taken ill or injured in the workplace

Overview:
By the end of the course students should be able to:

1. Know the action to take in an emergency situation
2. Know and demonstrate basic life saving techniques
3. Diagnose and deal with injury and illness in the workplace

Suitable for:
Emergency First Aiders in the work place

The Programme Topic areas are:
Session 1
• Administration procedures and course overview
• Respiration and hypoxia
• Nervous system problems (unconsciousness)
• The recovery position
• Circulatory disorders
• Legislation

General Objectives: By the end of this session students should be able to:
• Know the requirements of the EFAW
• Know how to check levels of response
• Appreciate the reasons for using the recovery position

Specific Objectives: By the end of this session students should be able to:
1. Define the aims of first aid
2. Identify hazards to respiration
3. Demonstrate how to examine an unconscious casualty
4. Demonstrate the correct procedure of placing a casualty in the recovery position

Session 2
• CPR
• Wound and bleeding
• Burns and scalds

General Objectives: By the end of this session students should be able to:
• Perform CPR
• Understand the treatment for bleeding
• Understand the treatment of burns

Specific Objectives: By the end of this session students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the treatment for bleeding
2. List three signs of a heart attack/cardiac arrest
3. Explain the treatment for burns
